Barrier creams and ointments

Barrier preparations often contain water repellent substances such as dimeticone or silicones.

Where the skin is broken, barrier preparations have a limited role in protecting adjacent skin. They are no substitute for adequate nursing care or for changing nappies regularly.

Cavilon® cream has both barrier and moisturising properties; it provides a breathable barrier which protects against skin breakdown and is resistant to wash-off which reduces the need for frequent re-application. Cavilon® is pH neutral and is therefore less likely to cause skin problems. It does not reduce absorbency of incontinence pads and will not affect tape or dressing adhesion. It has a concentrated formula. Manufacturers recommend that it is reapplied after three incontinence episodes.

Sudocrem® and zinc & castor oil ointment should not be used routinely on adult skin - only use if advised by a tissue viability/wound care specialist. Sudocrem® contains five of the listed excipients with a greater chance of causing skin sensitisation. Sudocrem® offers little advantage over zinc and castor oil ointment and is a more expensive product.
