Mucolytics
Mucolytic therapy should be stopped if there is no benefit after a 4 week trial.
Mucolytics may disrupt the gastric mucosal barrier - caution in patients with history of peptic ulceration.
Acetylcysteine 600mg effervescent tablets are not suitable for any patient who has a sodium restricted diet, and use with caution in patients who are concomitantly using Glyceryl trinitrate
Capsules should not be dispensed as they are more expensive than the tablets.
MTW: Can be used for the prevention of contrast media induced nephropathy in patients with pulmonary fibrosis. This is an unlicensed use and should only be prescribed by a specialist.
