Auto-injectors should be prescribed by brand as administration method may vary. Ensure the patient is trained for the device supplied.
The intramuscular route is the first choice route for the administration of adrenaline in an allergic emergency.
Dose of IM adrenaline for children over 12 years and adults for administration by a health care professional is 500 micrograms
Lower dose of 300 micrograms IM is recommended for self administration.
The dose can be repeated if necessary at 5 minute intervals.
