 April 2018: Obeticholic acid (Ocaliva▼): risk of serious liver injury in patients with pre-existing moderate or severe hepatic impairment; reminder to adjust dosing according to liver function monitoring

Other drugs should be taken at least 1 hour before or 4 - 6 hours after colestyramine to reduce the possiblity of interference with absorption.

Obeticholic acid is available from a specialist centre only and should be initiated and supervised by an appropriate specialist.

Colesevelam can be used for diarrhoea caused by bile acid malabsorption in patients who cannot tolerate colestyramine, following initiation by a specialist
