Drug Safety Update
September 2017: Loperamide (Imodium): reports of serious cardiac adverse reactions with high doses of loperamide associated with abuse or misuse
There have been reports of cardiac events include QT prolongation, torsardes de pointes and cardiac arrest in patients who have taken high or very high doses as a drug of abuse or self treatment of opioid withdrawal.
Diarrhoea is a symptom or complication rather than a disease state - treatment depends on the cause. Recent foreign travel, other drugs, antibiotics and food poisoning are frequent causes of self-limiting episodes of diarrhoea.
For causes secondary to antibiotic usage or infective organisms, avoid antimotility drugs and send a stool sample.
