Dopamine responsive conditions

Drug Safety Update

October 2024: Bromocriptine: monitor blood pressure when prescribing bromocriptine for prevention or inhibition of post-partum physiological lactation

December 2014: Ergot derived dopamine agonists: risk of fibrotic reactions

August 2007: Dopamine agonists: pathological gambling, increased libido and hypersexuality.

Dopamine agonists have been associated with excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden onset of sleep. Patients starting on these drugs should be warned of the possibility of these effects and the need for caution if driving or operating machinery

Bromocriptine and cabergoline are included in this section for their inhibition of prolactin release. Cabergoline has the advantage of once weekly administration, it is contraindicated during pregnancy. See here for the use of dopamine receptor agonists in Parkinsons Disease.
