Potassium-Sparing Diuretics

Drug Safety Update

February 2016: Co-prescribing an ACE inhibitor or Angiotensin-II receptor antagonists with potassium sparing diuretics - risk of fatal hyperkalaemia

Potassium sparing diuretics are used with thiazides or loop diuretics to potentiate their effects and/or conserve potassium

Amiloride dosage when combined with other diuretics is usually 5-10mg daily; maximum dose is 20mg daily when used alone. At higher doses it is necessary to prescribe the two drugs separately and not as the fixed combination

For combination products see loop diuretics and thiazide diuretics
