Loop Diuretics
Drug Safety Update
February 2016: Co-prescribing an ACE inhibitor or Angiotensin-II receptor antagonists with potassium sparing diuretics - risk of fatal hyperkalaemia
Furosemide and bumetanide are clinically similar. Furosemide 40mg is approximately equivalent to bumetanide 1mg. At higher bumetanide doses this ratio falls.
Bumetanide may be useful in patients with oedematous gut and those unresponsive to furosemide.
A Thiazide diuretic may be co-prescribed with a loop diuretic in the treatment of resistant oedema
