Drug Safety Update

May 2023: Glucose solutions: recommendations to minimise the risks associated with the accidental use of glucose solutions instead of saline solutions in arterial lines

NICE/Cochrane Review

Heparin versus 0.9% sodium chloride intermittent flushing for prevention of occlusion in central venous catheters in adults, September 2015

  • Conclusion: there is no good evidence that flushing with heparin is better than saline.

Caution:

There have been a number of instances where inappropriate strengths of heparin have been used as flush solutions.

Specialist advice must always be sought before administering these drugs to unblock lines. Also refer to local guidance.

Urokinase Supply Shortage

Due to a temporary supply issue with urokinase, it has been agreed that TauroLock can be used at MTW as an alternative.
